Approach to Organization Development
The stories we tell ourselves about our work and its meaning are powerful. Organizational stories – about how things are done here, who counts and who doesn’t – also carry deep meaning. When we seek to create change – to our work, our culture, our organization – we must first change our stories.
My approach to organization development is grounded in my extensive communications background. I listen to various stakeholders, and then work closely with you to shift narratives that aren’t serving you.
Each organization’s needs are different so I work with you to custom tailor the interventions that will best serve your organization.
Some examples include:
Organizational Assessment
Before we embark on our work together, it is critical to get a thorough snapshot of where we are right now. An organizational assessment can provide us with crucial information about what may be going on behind the scenes so that we can be sure that our work together addresses the right pieces of the puzzle.
Through a series of confidential conversations and interviews, surveys, and focus groups, I will identify organizational and programmatic strengths and opportunities for growth. Following the assessment, I provide a series of specific recommendations and work with you to develop an implementation plan to operationalize and execute on recommendations.
Strategic Advising
I love to serve as a thought partner on organizational strategy and tactics, questions about staffing, organizational culture, and other concerns. Together, we can make sure that you’re using all of the resources at your disposal to take your organization to the next level!
Executive Coaching
Change isn’t easy for anyone, including organizational leaders. Through a trusting relationship, I work to support and bolster leaders in our work together.
Internal Communications
Communication is everything. Organizational initiatives thrive on strong internal communication and can be sabotaged by poor internal communication. When we work together, I support you on how to best communicate with staff and other key stakeholders about what we’re doing, and why and how we’re doing it.
Organizational Culture
Organizational culture is the key to success. Without it, even the most brilliant strategy cannot succeed. If an organizational assessment finds that culture is at the root of the organization's challenges, we work together with a group of staff members from across the organization to identify ways to build trust, create opportunities for connection, and ensure that staff at all levels have what they need to feel good about coming to work every day. This can also include identifying opportunities for education on things from project management to people management to providing coaching to individual staff members.
Mission, Vision, and Values
Some of the most successful organizations have clear mission, vision, and values statements that answer the questions “what are we doing, why are we doing it, and how are we doing it?”.
Working closely with leadership, I engage key internal and external stakeholders in a series of conversations to write the organization's mission, vision, and values statements. These three documents then serve as a guide for everything your organization does.
Retreat Planning and Facilitation
Retreats and other key meetings can be incredibly meaningful. The more thoughtfully we prepare for their success in advance, the more effective they will be!
Working closely with leadership, staff, and other key stakeholders, we can not only set the goals and agenda for a retreat, but prepare working agreements as to how we intend to show up and engage one another during the retreat and beyond. We can make sure that people come prepared with any specific information we’ll need during the retreat, that people know their roles for the retreat, and we can set expectations so that everyone arrives on the same page and ready to participate. We will also identify activities and interventions that will help us to achieve the goals of the retreat.
As a facilitator, my intention is always to ensure that we create a safe and productive space for people to work together. Throughout the retreat, I will guide people through the various activities and interventions, and support participants along the way, ensuring that there is space and opportunity for all who wish to contribute to speak up.
Strategic Planning
Strategic planning only works if key stakeholders buy into the plan. That is why I so strongly believe in an inclusive process for strategic planning. Working closely with leadership and staff, we identify key stakeholders to bring into dialogue about the organization's future direction, and engage in a series of focus groups and interviews. We examine where the organization sits in the landscape of other nonprofits and/or companies providing similar services. We hash out what we will and won't do moving forward. We identify what our priorities are, and together, we set benchmarks for what success will look like.
Program Evaluation
Sometimes we settle into a pattern of working a certain way without ever having a moment to step back to see if our programs are serving our current needs the best way possible. Working with leadership, staff, and key stakeholders, I conduct an evaluation of programs to assess what is working well, what might need improvement, and make recommendations as to how to best meet programmatic goals.
Benchmark Setting
Benchmarks are critical for monitoring how well we are fulfilling our organization’s mission. For organizations that have not historically focused on metrics or benchmarks, it can be tough to know where to begin. I can work with you to evaluate where you've been and set SMART (specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, time-based) goals for where you want to go.
